In 2004, Summit Station Lodge and Tres Rios Outfitters combined their expertise to bring worldwide angling, for a lifetime experience. The goal was to bring the safest and most experienced fly-fishing guides, with extensive experience and knowledge of the Chilean Patagonia. We design trips according to the angling experience, provide fly-fishing schools, and offer anglers the option to take strategically pre-planned trips, or customized trips according to preferences and interests. We go fishing by drift boating-down on specialized McKenzie boats as well as with outboard engine boats, both with the purpose of reaching those untouched waters, which are inaccessible to most anglers. We experience Palena and Llanquihue Counties, which are by far, the two most beautiful places in Northern Patagonia, and contain some of the world's most secluded and undiscovered places for fly-fishing.
Lago Yelcho, is one of Chile's deepest lakes with world-class fly fishing. This Patagonia Lake is legendary for its wild and trophy-sized brown, rainbow and brook trout. It is fed by innumerable streams and the el Rio Futaleufú, creating the perfect breeding conditions for very strong, hard-fighting fish. The view with the glacier peaks with the lake in the background is simply breathtaking.
Our fly fishing Estacion Yelcho Lodge and cabin complex is in Puerto Cardenas, located next to Lago Yelcho. It is a pristine property where the Rio Futaleufu enters Lago Yelcho. This ensures exclusivity and privacy. The views of the surrounding mountains are majestic and serene. We have 3 cabins for 6 anglers, Construction is planned for 2 extra cabins. Of interest, the cabins were made in the authentic infrastructure cabins were built by colonizers a century ago. Even now, you can see this architecture in the region and see how people lived a century ago. Adding authentic Chilean culinary cuisine, endless nature, and world class fly fishing, is the perfect combination.

Day 1: Arrival and Introductions
Arrive in Santiago and connect to Puerto Montt. In Puerto Montt you board your 40-minute flight to Chaitén, a flight back in time. We will meet you at the airport where we start our drive into the Andes. The landscape will be volcanoes, hanging glaciers and the turquoise waters of Lago Yelcho. We arrive at our cabins, unpack, rest, and get ready for a welcome and introduction. Chilean wines and a taste of Chilean gastronomy.
Day 2: Lago Yelcho
We will take a short motor-boat ride or wade from the cabins in the lake. This place is beautiful and secluded part of Lago Yelcho. Hovering dragonflies will be the stars of this fly fishing day. We will be fishing for large rainbows that jump in pursuit of the numerous dragonflies that dart across the water. The size of the fish is15-25 inches on the average, maybe bigger. We will have lunch lakeside and will continue to fish other sections of the lake. After fishing, we head back to the lodge, and get ready for appetizers, and dinner.
| |
Day 3: Lower Futaleufu
Gearing up to angle the lower Futaleufu. The area is beautiful and pack with 20-25 inch Browns. We will drift through a canyon of steep granite walls, the banks of which are covered with a dense bamboo forest. Numerous high waterfalls will accent this grandiose landscape. On this stretch we will fish with streamers and look for fish under the thick vegetation that populates the banks of the Lower Futaleufu. Depending on the water levels, we will also take a detour and visit a small lagoon, with gigantic Browns. We'll have lunch streamside, even grill some meats by the river, and continue fishing in the afternoon. Later in the day, we will take advantage of the evening hatches with dry flies. We then return to the lodge late in the afternoon.
Day 4: Upper Rio Yelcho
On the far end of the Lago Yelcho, we find the Rio Yelcho, draining the lake as the water flows towards the ocean. Here we fish for Browns, Rainbows, and Stealhead, 18-20 inches in size. The water flows off the top of the lake and runs very clear. If the climate is good, we will grill some fresh seafood by the river, angle some more in the afternoon, and head back to the lodge.
Day 5: Lago Blanco
We will drive to this incredible natural beauty. We use small dry flies, looking for Rainbows, ranging in size from 20-22 inches. The scenery is likely the most breath taking of all, with White Mountains and forest with Chilean redwood (Bosques de Alerces). We will have lunch by the lake, and go back and tackle more trout. In the afternoon, we will head back to the lodge for another culinary traditional delicacy.
Day 6: Rio Pulamin
We will drive to this incredible trophy river. If the climate allows it, this is the best place to close this Chilean journey. Another option would be the lower Rio Yelcho, another great place for trophy trout. Browns, rainbows, steelhead, are the most common. Streamers are best used here. The scenery is grandiose, with all the Chilean Patagonia, one of the densest biodiversity in the world. Farewell dinner at the lodge.
Day 8: Departure

Accommodations: Estacion Yelcho Lodge
The Estacion Yelcho Lodge complex has 3 cabins, each allocating 2 people per cabin. They are comfortable and rustic. The cabins have a small kitchenette, coach, table, and independent bathroom. We also lease a small home for larger groups. The scenery is majestic. The western horizon is crowded by jagged peaks that tower up to 7,000 ft, dense forests, snow fields and glaciers above Lake Yelcho. The lodge has a small clubhouse/bar, where you can rest, read, have a cocktail, or get ready for the next day.
We have a talented, local chef, who will prepare a combination of local culinary tasting menus, carefully matched with fine Chilean wines. It is a Summit tradition.
